Sometimes data that has been lost on the hard drive is more difficult to recover because of the difficulty in tracking it down. But don’t worry, there are many ways to recover the data. However, first learn the causes of data loss on the hard drive.

Causes of Data Loss on Hard Drive

An external hard drive, also known as HDD, is a large storage device used by Windows and Mac. The function of a hard drive is generally used to store data, transfer files, or serve as a backup for important data.

It would be a big problem if the data stored on the storage space, especially the hard drive, is accidentally deleted. This mistake, sometimes causes panic and confusion especially if you don’t know the cause.

Just like any other type of storage device, hard drives are also prone to data loss due to various reasons. Here are some of the reasons for data loss on hard drives that are often encountered by users:

  • Accidental deletion of files.
  • Damage to a critical file system structure.
  • Unexpected system shutdown or application failure.
  • The data partition structure is damaged or partially lost.
  • Damage caused by a sudden power surge.
  • Virus attack due to downloading malicious data.

How to recover lost hard drive data

After knowing the cause of data loss on the hard drive, the next step can start to recover the data. There are several ways to restore formatted hard drive data without software that can be done immediately, if the data is lost.

The most common way is to directly measure the Recycle Bin folder if a file is deleted. However, it is different if the files are permanently deleted. Restoring the data stored on the hard drive requires extra effort.

Don’t panic and don’t worry because these methods have proven successful in restoring formatted data. Therefore, do some of the following tricks and methods carefully so that there are no wrong steps to take:

1. Restoring Data Using the Recycle Bin

Every laptop has a Recycle Bin that is automatically installed. Its main function is to become a trash can for various files or power that has been deleted. If deleted accidentally, then follow these steps:

  • Click the Start option and then enter the settings.
  • Then, find the deleted files in the Recycle Bin.
  • Click the Personalization option and then Themes. Then, look for the Desktop menu on the right side of the screen.
  • Make sure that the Recycle Bin checkbox is checked, then click the OK option.
  • Next, open the Recycle Bin, and right-click on the data or file you want to restore.
  • Click Restore.
  • To avoid a file that is permanently deleted in the Recycle Bin, right-click and select Properties.
  • Then, check the box that says Display delete confirmation dialog.
  • The data restore process is complete.

2. Restoring Data with File History

If you have previously backed up the file history, then through this feature you can track the deleted data. For Windows 10 operating system users, you can follow these steps to recover lost data:

  • Type the phrase “restore your files” in the search box within Windows.
  • After that, click the “restore your files with File History” option.
  • Then, type in the name of the file that you have lost and want to recover. Use the mouse cursor to move the screen if you want to browse the file manually.
  • Once found, select the deleted file by restoring it to its original location.
  • Click the “Restore” option to end the process.

3. Restore Data With Command Prompt or CMD Command

The third way to restore formatted hard drive data without additional software is by utilizing features on a laptop. This feature is a Command Prompt or command that uses CMD.

But please note, this second method is not recommended to be done independently if you have no previous experience. If you want to do this method, you must understand the operation of the Command Prompt.

That is, every word typed in the Command Prompt column will potentially be a command that will be directly carried out by the operating system. Therefore, do not let there be a wrong sentence when typed.

  • Click the Search option on the Windows Bar, then enter by typing CMD.
  • Then, right-click in the CMD column, then press Run as Administrator.
  • Once logged in, type chkdsk X:/f. But, replace the letter X with the name of the drive where the formatted data is stored.
  • Type the command ATTRIB -H -R -S/S/D X:*.* in the CMD column. Don’t forget, replace the letter X with the name of the drive where you want to restore the data.
  • Wait for the recovery process to finish.

4. Restoring Data Using the Restore Previous Versions Feature

The last way to restore formatted hard drive data without software is by utilizing the Restore Previous Versions feature. This method can be an option that must be tried when there are files deleted in the Recycle Bin and want to be restored.

  • Click the Start menu, then select and click the folder that contains the deleted data.
  • Right-click on the folder, then choose the Restore Previous Version option.
  • After that, click the Open menu to see the list of files that were available before they were deleted.
  • Then, click the Restore option to restore the deleted data.
  • The data recovery process is complete.

These are some ways to restore formatted hard drive data without additional software that can be done when a file is deleted/lost. These methods can restore the data back to its original state. However, it is also possible that the method will not work.

To successfully recover formatted data, it is recommended to use an additional application or software to make the process faster. In addition, the possibility of recovering deleted data will be greater than without using an application.

However, users can first try the above methods without using software to be safer. Keep in mind, be careful about using storage devices that contain important data to avoid formatting errors.
